Calcutta HC orders police not to take step against ED for Sandeshkhali Incident
ED in relief for the time being in Sandeshkhali case. Strict police action cannot be taken against the Central Investigation Agency till Monday. Justice Joy Sengupta gave such a verbal order on Thursday.
The ED informed the court on Thursday, “A total of four FIRs have been filed in the Sandeshkhali incident. A complaint has been filed against us in one of those cases. Our officers were beaten up in front of the media.” After hearing this, Justice Joy Sengupta’s verbal order said that the police will not be able to take any strict action against the ED officials till Monday. The next hearing of the case is on Monday. Meanwhile, the ED requested to file a counter-case demanding the dismissal of the FIR. Justice Rajsekhar Mantha allowed the case to be filed. Hearing likely at 12 noon.
It is to be noted that on January 5, ED officials visited the house of TMC leader Sheikh Shahjahan in Sandeshkhali. Three officers were attacked by his followers there. Among them, an officer named Ramkumar Ram was beheaded. Two other officers were also seriously injured. Each of them was also admitted to the hospital at that time. After that, the ED officials went to Shankar Adhya’s house in Bongaon that night and faced resistance. Despite this, an FIR was lodged against the ED. BJP filed a Public Interest Litigation strongly protesting this incident. The EDO approached the High Court.
