Don’t panic across the country. The economy is on the verge of becoming beleaguered by the MARK virus. In the meantime, the Reserve Bank has given sensational information in response to an RTI. The country’s top debt defaulters have been forgiven a debt of about 6 thousand crore. The list of defaulters includes a number of people who are under investigation for financial scandals.

An RTI activist named Saket Gokhale filed an RTI asking for the names of the top 50 defaulters in the country and the amount of their current debts. In response, the top bank said, “Banks owe Tk 6,606 crore to the top 50 defaulters.” At the top of this list is the name of the controversial jewelry merchant Mehul Choksi. The RBI has waived off Tk 5,492 crore from Choksi alone. In second place are Sanjay and Sandeep Jhunjhunwala, two directors of REI Agro. Their total debt of Tk 4,314 crore has been written off. Another jewelery trader Jatin Mehta has been given a waiver of around Tk 4,08 crore. Also on the list are Baba Ramdev and Acharya Balakrishna’s company Ruchi Soya Industries Limited. They have been forgiven about 2 thousand 212 crore.

RTI activist Saket Gokhale says, “In the last budget session, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi sought this information from Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and State Minister for Finance Anurag Tagore. But then they did not want to give this information. The Reserve Bank gave me this information, ”Saket said in a tweet.
